From Care to Action: Collective Support and Lasting Impact

At From This Island, we believe meaningful products should spark meaningful impact. Through our Impact Program, 1% of sales from selected impact products are donated to initiatives that support environmental restoration, community empowerment, and sustainability education across Indonesia.

Guided by our three impact pillars—For The Forest, For The People, and For The Future—we collaborate with implementation partners, who manage project delivery and oversee community engagement, to create long-term, measurable change. From restoring degraded ecosystems and strengthening local livelihoods to supporting access to education and disaster recovery efforts, each initiative is designed to contribute to a more resilient future.

Over the past several months, these efforts have supported emergency response and recovery programs in North Sumatra and advanced landscape restoration projects in both North Sumatra and Central Kalimantan. Together, these initiatives demonstrate how collective support can help communities recover, rebuild, and thrive.

Responding When Communities Need It Most

Earlier this year, floods and landslides affected communities in North Sumatra, disrupting access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and education.

The Sumatra Flood & Landslide Emergency Response (SAFER) program enabled our team to deliver targeted emergency support in water, sanitation, and education, reaching 1,701 individuals in Tapanuli Tengah, North Sumatra.

After the disaster, four water tanks were installed, providing daily access to clean water for 1,660 people. Sanitation facilities at evacuation centers were renovated to ensure safer, more reliable access for families during recovery. A total of 521 students received school kits to support their return to regular learning.

These efforts highlight that recovery involves not only physical rebuilding but also restoring stability and daily routines for affected families.

Restoring Landscapes, Strengthening Communities

Meeting immediate needs is just the first step in recovery.

Through the For The Forest initiative, our organization coordinated landscape restoration in Sei Gohong, Central Kalimantan, and Hutanabolon, North Sumatra. In Sei Gohong, 1,000 trees were planted across 4.09 hectares with active participation from local residents, especially women.

In Hutanabolon, 800 trees were planted on 1.8 hectares, involving both youth and other community members. Forest restoration is about more than simply planting trees. While monoculture systems rely on a single species, diverse restoration and agroforestry approaches help create healthier and more resilient ecosystems. By planting a variety of native and livelihood-supporting species, restoration efforts can improve biodiversity, stabilize soil, strengthen water systems, and provide long-term economic value for local communities. This ensures that recovery efforts benefit both people and the environment for years to come.

By directly involving the community, these projects contribute to greater resilience, support biodiversity, and help establish sustainable livelihoods.

Looking Ahead

Each water tank, school kit, and tree planted represents a tangible step toward long-term community development. Together, these actions strengthen communities and support a more resilient future. Thank you to Islanders and everyone who supports these efforts and helps turn care into meaningful action.
